First, there’s nothing wrong with working to control carbon emissions; using technology, not by freezing the construction of or shutting down coal-fired power plants. The world’s resources are ours to use for our advancement. It makes no sense to leave in the ground resources that can and should be used to make our lives better. Technology includes the use of emission controls, sequestration, and recycling.

Second, it is arrogant, short-sighted, and naïve to assume we can halt climate change.  I’m not sure we even can, or should want to, mitigate it. Climate change has been happening all by itself for millions of years, and it shall continue. CO2 is contributed to the atmosphere by a number of sources.

The resolution, aimed at E.P.A. rules on coal-fired power plants, might make it harder for the president to negotiate a climate change accord in Paris in two weeks.
