Pat Shingleton: “Forecasting Accomplishments”

The 1800s were years of accomplishment in meteorological circles.  In 1842, Elias Loomis produces the first weather map of an 1836 storm.  Two years later, Samuel Morse perfects the telegraph, enabling transmission of weather observations.  In 1870, a National Weather Forecast Bureau officially begins, the word forecast is established and 22 sites begin observing weather for the Army Signal Corps.  Congress organizes the Weather Bureau in 1890; the name remains until 1967, when it’s changed to the National Weather Service.  By 1891, the Secretary of Agriculture ordered detonation of explosives in the air for rain-making experiments.  At the end of the 1890s, data from balloons and kites provide the first soundings from the upper layers of the atmosphere, leading to the discovery of the stratosphere. In 1903, Orville Wright seeks the advice of the Weather Bureau before making his historic flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. The following year, airplanes are used to collect atmospheric data. German engineer, Christain Hulsmeyer becomes the first to use radio waves to detect ships at sea to prevent collisions. In 1924, radar is born.  By 1927, the first radio-wind-sounding device

AP FACT CHECK: On climate science, most GOP candidates fail – Yahoo News

Please use the menu at the top of the page to access all topics.

Are climate scientists just ignoring the fact that the earth has warmed many times prior to human existence, are they under pressure by their governments to put the burden of creating additional bureaucracies on the taxpayers, or are they conspiring to keep the grant money flowing?

Of course, they didn’t have to know who the presidential candidates were as long as they could give a failing grade to whoever disagreed with their views. For that, the climate scientists get the failing grades.

The history of meteorological observations is short compared to natural cycles of warming and cooling. It does look like bias may win out, but it sure will be bitter sweet to say “we told you so.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — When it comes to climate science, two of the three Democratic presidential candidates are ‘A’ students, while most of the Republican contenders are flunking, according to a panel of scientists who reviewed candidates’ comments.

The Source and Sink of CO2

Back to Previous Page

Please use the menu at the top of the page to access all topics.
What came first; no, not the chicken or the egg, but oxygen or carbon dioxide? The world started out with more carbon dioxide and other gases, and very little oxygen. Oxygen didn’t come until plants gained a foothold and started producing it. Then the animals came and they started consuming the oxygen and producing carbon dioxide. For the most part.

You may believe, from the headlines, that humans produce all of the CO2, and more, by burning fossil fuels.  But all animals, down to the smallest ant, produce CO2. It’s a fact of nature. Plants also release CO2 in addition to the oxygen they produce.

By far, the largest source of CO2, along with terrestrial (soil and vegetation), residual atmospheric CO2, and volcanic activity, are the oceans. Conservatively, these natural sources of CO2 combined account for approximately 97 percent of the CO2 available.

Carbon dioxide is both released and absorbed by the soil, vegetation, and oceans.  It is not easily sequestered (held in place). In fact, with warming, more CO2 is lost from the natural sources, and less is absorbed.

To be fair, supposedly, the amount of CO2 released by the oceans and terrestrial systems is in balance with what is absorbed; the small amount (approximately 3%) produced by burning fossil fuels accumulates (is not reabsorbed), again supposedly, thereby leading to the additional warming.

This begs the question: what came first; no, not the chicken or the egg, but CO2 or warming? If the earth has been warming since the last glacial period, as seen in the geologic record, it stands to reason that CO2 levels also would be increasing. This is the natural cycle.

Senate Votes to Block Obama’s Climate Change Rules – The New York Times

Please use the menu at the top of the page to access all topics.

First, there’s nothing wrong with working to control carbon emissions; using technology, not by freezing the construction of or shutting down coal-fired power plants. The world’s resources are ours to use for our advancement. It makes no sense to leave in the ground resources that can and should be used to make our lives better. Technology includes the use of emission controls, sequestration, and recycling.

Second, it is arrogant, short-sighted, and naïve to assume we can halt climate change.  I’m not sure we even can, or should want to, mitigate it. Climate change has been happening all by itself for millions of years, and it shall continue. CO2 is contributed to the atmosphere by a number of sources.

I don’t have much to say about Dark Matter or this theory except that it’s another spectacular phenomenon that steered our world in a direction that was perfect for the establishment of the human race.  Also, it reveals another temporal earth cycle, other than human influence, that may explain climate change, albeit on a large scale.

“Hence we must say that for the knowledge of any truth whatsoever man needs divine help, that the intellect may be moved by God to its act. But he does not need a new light added to his natural light, in order to know the truth in all things, but only in some that surpasses his natural knowledge” (Summa Theologiae, I-II, 109, 1).

“Legalism can suck the life out of genuine religion if it becomes too great a preoccupation with the letter of the law to the neglect of the spirit and purpose of the law. The law can become an end in itself, so that the value the law was intended to promote is overlooked. But we must guard against going to the opposite extreme and seeing law as useless or something to be lightly regarded. Laws ideally state those things that are for the best interests of everyone and make sure the rights of all are safeguarded. From Raymond, we can learn a respect for law as a means of serving the common good. ” (Saint of the Day [Raymond of Penafort], Franciscan Media).

“There are some who desire knowledge merely for its own sake; and that is shameful curiosity. And there are others who desire to know, in order that they may themselves be known; and that is vanity, disgraceful too. Others again desire knowledge in order to acquire money or preferment by it; that too is a discreditable quest. But there are also some who desire knowledge, that they may build up the souls of others with it; and that is charity. Others, again, desire it that they may themselves be built up thereby; and that is prudence. Of all these types, only the last two put knowledge to the right use” (St. Bernard, Sermon on the Canticle of Canticles).

Ozone Hole

Back to Previous Page

Please use the menu at the top of the page to access all topics.

We don’t know what the ozone hole was doing more than 40 or 50 years go, much less during periods like the “dust bowl,” or during previous warming periods over the earth’s long history.  The earth started out with no ozone or oxygen, (and more carbon dioxide) but gradually developed to the state where plants could evolve, which started spewing oxygen into the atmosphere.  Animals evolved and started using oxygen and spewing carbon dioxide.

Thus began a vicious cycle; the biomass of oxygen consuming (and carbon dioxide creating) species increasing beyond the biomass of carbon dioxide consuming (and oxygen creating) species.  It is difficult to say whether the cycles of a warming and cooling planet are related to the biomass cycle, or vice versa.  But undoubtedly, during the warming periods, the amount of ozone in the atmosphere decreases due to the decrease in the oxygen/carbon dioxide ratio.

Here we go again!  The article goes on to state that these “holes” are the the largest ever recorded, failing to mention that the “recorded history” of the ozone hole goes back only about 40 years, an order of magnitude less than the recorded history of the earth’s temperature.

The liberal media will say and do anything to conduct another experiment with our country and to promote their agenda.  They must be saying: “Let’s elect a liberal woman president, something we’ve never done; then we can say we elected a woman president.”

From October 29, 2015:

The debates seem like an act to me.  Like the candidates are following a script, that is plotted out to a predetermined outcome.

We need to find a middle ground where all classes (sexes, races, “deviants”) can live together with an understanding of all their limitations and tendencies.

We need to find the best possible way to prosecute and process criminals and decide to live with and pay for it. We need to find the best possible way to care for the needy and decide to live with and pay for it.

That may be what the presidential candidates are trying to do but they all have different ideas.  And the best possible way to do all we should do may be beyond our grasp as a human race.  Maybe we haven’t attained that level of intelligence yet.

Not only did God give us reasoning and morality, but it seems he didn’t distribute it evenly among us. Some of us have more reasoning and morality than others. That’s because he also gave us free will and independence. He didn’t give reasoning and morality to the other animals but he did give them free will.

So free will isn’t special; it’s a bane. On the other hand, our ability to reason and know right from wrong is (special).
